We're growing and currently hiring for 2024! See below for open positions.
Cultivating Deeper Roots Apprenticeship Program: The Cultivating Deeper Roots Apprenticeship is a 9-month program designed to give a hands-on educational experience to those seeking to learn how to farm for market in Central New York. Apprentices will help with all aspects of the farm. Work includes sowing, planting, weeding, irrigating, and harvesting a variety of crops. Apprentices will learn how to market produce through various direct and whole-sale markets including a Community Supported Agriculture Program, farmers markets, sales to local restaurants, and distribution to food pantries.
The apprenticeship model is mainly focused on learning by doing and will include structured educational opportunities. Weekly farm meetings/walks, monthly classes, visits to other farms, and networking events will be provided to expand knowledge around food production and marketing. The apprenticeship program runs from March to December. We seek people who are interested in increasing their skills in growing and marketing produce. The apprenticeship will conclude with support to apprentices for establishing their own agricultural enterprises. We are looking for 2 part-time and 2 full-time apprentices this season. See below for a full description and application.
Salt City Harvest Farm welcomes the public to the farm during public events, our Last Saturday of the Month volunteer workdays, and through private group tours and workdays. At SCHF we strive to grow more than only food. We are committed to growing culture and community as well! The community at SCHF includes a rich cultural diversity of people from all over the world. We strive to connect people of all ages and backgrounds to new foods, cultures, and plants.
Last Saturday of the Month Volunteer Days
Every Last Saturday of the month (April - September) we invite the public to the farm to help us in the fields. Last Saturday volunteer days run from 10am - 2pm. Volunteers help us plant, weed, and distribute produce. Volunteers have also helped us paint our pavilion, prune our orchard, and mulch our rhubarb. Most farm tasks include lifting, squatting, bending, lots of walking, and spending the day outside. Please come dressed appropriately for the weather and work. There's a good chance you'll get dirty!
We recommend you bring the following gear when volunteering with SCHF:
- Water bottle
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
- Sturdy shoes
If you’re interested in becoming a more regular volunteer with us (beyond the Last Saturdays) or would like to set up a private workday with your organization, please fill out the form below. We also welcome volunteers who have experience in event planning, serving on committees, marketing, and volunteer coordination.
